chronicles of planning a korean-american wedding part 50,077: the hanbok
my mother-in-law gave me a stack of pictures as thick as my old lawschool books and told me to pick one that i liked. i picked a few, based solely on the colors because they really looked the same to me. she went to order the hanbok, and ordered a traditional "sae sekshi" green top, red skirt hanbok, neither of which i had chosen. but since she had "lovingly chosen the best one for me" i was not permitted to change it. i was ok with that....eventually
we went to try it on today. my mom, mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law were really excited when i came out and, as i rolled my eyes, they all gushed that i was a true "sae sekshi." when we went inside, my mom asked me, "do you like it??" and i told her that i did not.
she asked, "why not? it's beautiful!"
"for the same reason i didn't like it in the beginning mom. the colors are hideous on me."
"it's not just your opinion [of what looks pretty on you] that matters," she explained.
"yea," i said, oozing sarcasm, "i'm only the one that has to wear it."
"exactly!" she exclaimed triumphantly.
the end.
